The soft lapping of the waves against the shoreline was the only sound to be heard for miles. Ceaselessly, the waves washed on shore and were then pulled back, sounding like wind through pine needles. At this time, in late fall, the forests were silent, creatures already bedding down to wait out the winter. The last leaves, still clinging to the spindly branches of the trees, broke off one by one, floating down to land like colorful skirts around the bases of bare trees.
Along the shoreline, a lone figure made its way slowly down the water's edge, orange and black fur melding him with the backdrop of fall colors. His green eyes, usually vigilant and mischievous, were distant and distracted, focusing on something lifetimes away.
He was back in the old territories, back to his past. He could still remember the smells of the old forest, the feel of the familiar grass under his paws. Most of all, he remembered those who had been lost after the fire. Particularly, he remembered her. He remembered Skysong.
Halting abruptly, Blitzfire looked out over the water, toward the distant mountains. Is that where they had come from? Is that the place from which his memories still called to him? He didn't remember. It all felt so long ago, yet so close.
Sitting close to the water's edge, he wrapped his tail around his paws and stared at his reflection in the water. Somehow, he still thought of himself as that young warrior from his past, cheerful and carefree, sharing tongues outside of the den, or splitting a piece of fresh kill with Skysong. He closed his eyes and bowed his head. Great StarClan, he missed her. He missed her so much that it felt as if void had been opened his his heart, a void that could never be filled again.
Yes, he missed her. In fact, he missed everything about his old life.
